SP-BSP finalise seat-sharing for 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh
Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party on Thursday named the Lok Sabha seats each will contest in Uttar Pradesh. The SP will fight 37 seats and the BSP 38, while three seats have gone to the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The alliance will not field candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli.
The seat division
When they first announced the alliance, the two parties had said they would each contest 38 of the state’s 80 constituencies. The final allocation was released in a statement signed by SP president Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati.
Seats in the SP’s share include:
- Kairana, Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Bareilly and Badaun
- Mainpuri, Firozabad, Etawah, Kanpur, Kannauj and Lucknow
- Jhansi, Banda, Allahabad, Kaushambi and Phulpur
- Faizabad, Gonda, Gorakhpur and Azamgarh
- Mirzapur and Varanasi
Varanasi and the Congress
The SP will also contest Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency. The two parties have joined hands to take on the BJP in the general election. Uttar Pradesh has 80 Lok Sabha seats in all, and following this final announcement the Congress has been left with just two.
What happened next
The 2019 Lok Sabha election was held between 11 April and 19 May and counted on 23 May; the BJP won 303 of 543 seats nationally.
