Mayawati threatens to review support to Kamal Nath government after Guna candidate defects
BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday threatened to reconsider her party’s support to the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh after the BSP’s candidate for the Guna Lok Sabha seat switched to the Congress.
The defection
Lokendra Singh Rajput, the BSP’s candidate from Guna, joined the Congress on Monday evening and declared his support for Jyotiraditya Scindia, the sitting Guna MP and Congress candidate.
Mayawati’s response
In posts in Hindi on her official Twitter account, Mayawati said the Congress was no different from the BJP when it came to misusing government machinery, and accused it of intimidating the BSP’s Guna candidate into pulling out of the contest.
She said the BSP would respond by contesting the election on its own symbol and would also reconsider whether to continue supporting the Congress government in the state.
Why her support matters
In last year’s Assembly election, the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the 230-member House with 114 seats, two short of a majority, while the BJP won 109. The Congress formed the government with the support of two BSP MLAs, one Samajwadi Party MLA and four independents, and Kamal Nath became Chief Minister.
