Rahul Gandhi Calls RBI’s Record Transfer to Govt a ‘Stolen Band-Aid on a Gunshot Wound’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the government on Tuesday over the record transfer of funds from the Reserve Bank of India, saying both the Prime Minister and finance minister had no idea how to fix an economic crisis of their own making and accusing them of “stealing” from the central bank.

The trigger

The RBI had allowed the government to draw Rs 1.76 lakh crore out of its reserves to give the economy a fresh push.

What Rahul Gandhi said

“PM and FM are clueless about how to solve their self-created economic disaster,” he wrote on Twitter. He compared taking money from the RBI to stealing a Band-Aid from a dispensary and putting it on a gunshot wound, and used the hashtag #RBILooted.

Other Congress reactions

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asked in a separate tweet whether the decision amounted to “fiscal prudence or fiscal hara-kiri”. He questioned whether it was mere coincidence that the figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore matched what he called the amount missing from the Budget calculations, and asked whether the money would be used to help the BJP’s friends.

Surjewala also shared a media report on what it described as the mystery of a missing Rs 1.7 lakh crore in India’s budget.

Party spokesperson Sanjay Jha posted a short jibe on Twitter, expanding RBI as “Robbed Bank of India”.
