Delhi election 2020 dates announced: voting on February 8, results on February 11

On Monday the Election Commission of India set out the timetable for the Delhi assembly election. All 70 seats will vote in a single phase on February 8, and votes will be counted on February 11. The model code of conduct came into force the same day.

The schedule

The term of the current 70-member Delhi Assembly ends on February 22, so a new House must be in place before then. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said the Commission was also bringing in a new idea of absentee voters for this election.

What the parties said

The Aam Aadmi Party, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is seeking a second straight term on the strength of a number of announcements made over the past year. Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal said the contest would be about his government’s five-year record. “This will be the first election in India where people will vote for schools and hospitals,” he said.

The BJP, out of power in Delhi for 20 years, hopes to win the capital. Its Delhi election in-charge Prakash Javadekar said, “The people of Delhi have made up their mind to bring BJP in power.”

What happened next

In the 2020 Delhi election the Aam Aadmi Party won 62 seats and the BJP 8, and Arvind Kejriwal remained Chief Minister.
