Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi visit Raebareli to thank voters after 2019 win
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her daughter, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, arrived in Raebareli on Wednesday to thank voters for re-electing Sonia Gandhi to the Lok Sabha. It was their first visit to the constituency since the results.
The visit
According to Lal Aash Kiran Pratap Singh, the district Congress spokesperson, the two leaders landed at Fursatganj airport and then travelled in a convoy to the Bhuyemau guest house. Priyanka Gandhi, who is in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh for the party, was expected to meet district party chiefs there and review the election performance with them and with candidates. More than 2,500 party workers had been invited to an evening thanksgiving event, Singh said.
The pair were not expected to go to neighbouring Amethi, where Congress president Rahul Gandhi was defeated. One Congress leader said a trip there looked unlikely for now.
Results in Uttar Pradesh
The Congress suffered one of its worst defeats in Uttar Pradesh, which elects 80 members to the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi to Union minister Smriti Irani of the BJP by 55,120 votes; in 2014 he had beaten her there by more than 1.07 lakh votes. Raebareli was the only seat the Congress won in the state, with Sonia Gandhi defeating the BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh by 1,67,178 votes.
Sonia Gandhi’s message to voters
In a letter to her constituents in May, Sonia Gandhi said she would not hold back from sacrificing whatever she had to defend the country’s basic values and the Congress’s traditions. She acknowledged that difficult days lay ahead but said the party would face every challenge with the support of the people.
She thanked Congress workers as well as friends from the SP, BSP and Swabhiman Dal for working for her victory; the SP and BSP had not put up candidates against her. Describing the people of Raebareli as her family, she wrote: “My life is an open book before all of you.”
