Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls likely later this year, says Election Commission

The Election Commission (EC) said on Tuesday that it may hold Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir later this year. An announcement could come after the Amarnath Yatra, which is expected to end around mid-August.

What the EC said

In a statement, the Commission said it would keep monitoring the situation in the state on a regular and continuous basis, take inputs from all relevant quarters, and announce the schedule for the Assembly election once the yatra was over.

Background

Governor Satya Pal Malik dissolved the Assembly in November, after the state was plunged into a political crisis. The EC chose not to hold the Assembly election together with the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, citing security concerns.

What happened next

In August 2019, Parliament ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370, and the state was reorganised into two union territories. In the 2024 Assembly election, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference won 42 seats, the BJP 29, the Congress 6 and the PDP 3, and Omar Abdullah became Chief Minister.
