The result of the Rajouri Garden assembly bypoll in Delhi has come as a setback for the Aam Aadmi Party, which is contesting the city’s municipal elections in full for the first time. The bypoll had been seen as a curtain-raiser to the civic polls due on April 23.

The result

• Manjinder Singh Sirsa (BJP-SAD): 40,602 votes, more than 50 per cent of the votes cast
• Meenakshi Chandela (Congress): 25,950 votes
• Harjeet Singh (AAP): 10,243 votes, losing his deposit

Reactions

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said the win for the BJP-Akali candidate was a “reflection of the people’s mood in Delhi”. Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken congratulated party workers and urged them to keep working, predicting that the Congress would be the surprise package in the municipal polls.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia argued that the bypoll would have no effect on the civic election results. Experts disagreed, saying the outcome would certainly influence the municipal contest because it came so soon before it.
