Rajnath Singh visits National War Memorial, takes charge as Defence Minister
Rajnath Singh visited the National War Memorial in Delhi on Saturday and paid tribute to soldiers who died in the line of duty after Independence, before formally taking charge as Defence Minister.
He was accompanied by the chiefs of the three services: General Bipin Rawat of the Army, Admiral Karambir Singh of the Navy and Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa.
First day at the ministry
On Friday, after being allotted the Defence portfolio, Singh had tweeted that he would visit the memorial to pay his respects. He also said he looked forward to further strengthening national security and defence.
After he assumed charge, officials of the Ministry of Defence gave him a detailed presentation on how the ministry works. Singh asked them to prepare detailed presentations on every division and to set time-bound targets to achieve the desired results.
Senior-most minister
Singh was Home Minister in the previous NDA government from 2014 to 2019 and is the senior-most leader in the new government. He was the first Union Minister to take the oath on Thursday, right after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the Lok Sabha election, the BJP took 303 of the 542 seats where polling was held, and the NDA ended with 353 seats.
