Rajasthan assembly elections 2018: Amit Shah to interact with youths on November 21 in Jaipur

Two weeks before the Rajasthan assembly election, the BJP announced that party president Amit Shah would hold a question-and-answer session with young voters in Jaipur on 21 November 2018.

The plan

Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, announcing the event at a press conference in Jaipur, said about 4,000 young people would attend the main session at the Tagore School auditorium. It would be streamed live to gatherings in Bharatpur, Udaipur, Kota, Jodhpur, Ajmer and Bikaner, from where registered participants could put questions, and to town-hall meetings at some 200 other places across the state. Questions could also be sent through social media. Rathore presented the event as part of the party’s habit of talking directly to young voters.

The election

Rajasthan voted on 7 December 2018 for 199 of its 200 seats; polling in Ramgarh was postponed after the death of a candidate. The BJP was defending the government of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and the state had switched between the BJP and the Congress at every election since 1993.

What happened next

That pattern held. When the votes were counted on 11 December 2018, the Congress won 99 seats and the BJP 73. Ashok Gehlot was sworn in as Chief Minister on 17 December 2018, with Sachin Pilot as his deputy. Five months later, in the 2019 general election, the BJP won 24 of Rajasthan’s 25 Lok Sabha seats and its ally the 25th, a reminder that state and national contests are decided differently.
