PM Modi to address BJP Parivartan Rally in Dehradun

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Dehradun on Tuesday to speak at a Parivartan Rally, part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign to reach voters ahead of the coming Uttarakhand assembly election.

Projects on the agenda

During the visit the Prime Minister was also expected to launch a number of projects. The most prominent was the Chardham Highway Development programme, a road scheme covering about 900 km that is intended to improve links to the four Himalayan pilgrimage shrines in the state.

The Kanpur speech

The Dehradun event followed a rally in Kanpur, where Mr Modi accused opposition parties of standing up for people facing corruption allegations. Referring to the protests in Parliament, he said: “This is the first time in country’s history that people were raising slogans in Parliament to save the corrupt.”

It was also at Kanpur that he first said the government would shortly bring in two schemes meant to persuade both shoppers and traders to move towards digital payments.

The Parivartan rallies formed a central part of the BJP’s outreach in the states due to vote in early 2017, with the Prime Minister as the party’s leading campaigner.

What happened next

In the 2017 Uttarakhand assembly election the BJP won 57 seats and the Congress 11. Trivendra Singh Rawat became Chief Minister after the result.
