On Indira Gandhi’s Death Anniversary, Priyanka Gandhi Recalls a ‘Shloka’ She Taught Her

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid tribute to her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, on Twitter on Thursday, the anniversary of her death.

Writing in Hindi, Priyanka recalled the first ‘shloka’ that Indira Gandhi had taught her and her brother, Rahul Gandhi, and said the last line of the prayer had come back to her. The verse asks to be led from ignorance to truth, from darkness to light and from death to immortality, and closes with a call for peace.

Rahul Gandhi also posted on Twitter in memory of his grandmother, praising her strength of will.

The ‘Second Indira’ comparison

Priyanka is frequently likened to her grandmother, and some call her the ‘Second Indira’ because of her looks and her way of working. Responding to such comparisons earlier in the year, she said she could not be compared with Indira Gandhi but would do everything she could to follow her example.

At the time, she said the urge to serve the public that Indira Gandhi had felt was shared by her and her brother. “Nobody can take that out of our hearts,” she said, adding that they would keep serving people regardless of whether they were allowed to.
