Nitin Patel set to be Gujarat’s next deputy chief minister
Nitin Patel, a senior minister in Gujarat’s BJP government, is set to take on a bigger role as the state’s next deputy chief minister, a couple of days after the BJP accepted Anandiben Patel’s resignation.
The expected announcement
A formal announcement on Mr Patel’s elevation was expected after a meeting of the BJP legislature party scheduled for 4 pm. According to sources, he is regarded as the second most senior figure in the state cabinet.
His name is reported to have the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and of Anandiben Patel herself. Reports at the time differed on the exact post he would take, with some sources describing him as the choice for the top job.
What happened next
In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly election the BJP won 99 seats and the Congress 77. Vijay Rupani was Chief Minister after that election.
