Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday and is expected to be named the party’s candidate for one of the Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Arun Jaitley were present when the former opening batsman was formally inducted at an event in the capital.

BJP swipe at the Congress

On the same day, the BJP mocked the Congress after it postponed a scheduled press briefing. The Congress had been due to speak to the media at about 10 am but later pushed the briefing back to the afternoon. The BJP responded by saying Rahul Gandhi apparently could not get up in the morning.

Background

Gambhir’s induction came as parties were finalising candidates for the general election. His entry adds a well-known sporting name to the BJP’s line-up in the national capital.

What happened next

The 2019 Lok Sabha election was held between 11 April and 19 May, and votes were counted on 23 May 2019. The BJP won 303 of 543 seats, and Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term on 30 May 2019.
