Rajnath Singh accuses Congress of creating ‘trust deficit’ in politics

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, campaigning in Rajasthan on Monday, accused leaders of the Congress of eroding public trust in politics, and said it was the BJP government that was working for people’s development.

Attack on Congress leaders

Singh objected to remarks involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother. Congress leader Raj Babbar, while campaigning in Madhya Pradesh, had likened the fall in the rupee’s value to the age of Modi’s mother, Hiraben. Singh said the prime minister’s office was an institution and not merely an individual.

Addressing a public meeting in Jaipur’s Amber constituency, he said: “There is a difference between what Congress leaders say and what they do.” He argued that the Congress had damaged trust in the country’s politics and that the BJP saw repairing it as its challenge. Drawing on the Ramayana, he said Lord Ram is revered over Ravana, though Ravana was wealthier and cleverer, because Ram lived by the principle of ‘maryada’.

Security and Pakistan

At a rally in Rajakhedra in Dholpur district, Singh said national security was essential for development and praised the Army and paramilitary forces for guarding the country at the risk of their lives. He said the forces were responding firmly to terrorists and that security would not be compromised.

He said Modi had tried to improve ties with Pakistan but the neighbour had not changed, and that soldiers had been told not to count bullets when fired upon from across the border. He also claimed that the Centre’s policies had made India the world’s fastest-growing economy.

Caste remark

Singh also took aim at former Union minister CP Joshi over a caste-related jibe at Modi, while campaigning in Nathdwara, where Joshi was a candidate. “The country will run only on the lines of justice and humanity,” Singh said, rejecting casteism.
