Article 370, Kashmir and NRC Likely on Agenda as RSS-BJP Meet Opens in Pushkar

A three-day coordination meeting between the RSS and the BJP begins on Friday in the Rajasthan pilgrimage town of Pushkar. More than 200 members of various RSS affiliates are taking part in the annual gathering, which brings the BJP’s ideological parent and the government together.

Who is attending

The meeting coincides with the first 100 days of the Narendra Modi government’s second consecutive term. Senior minister Nitin Gadkari, BL Santosh, the BJP’s general secretary in charge of organisation, and working president JP Nadda are expected to take part.

Likely topics

In its second term the government has acted on some of the RSS’s core ideological concerns, including ending Kashmir’s special status and Triple Talaq. The meeting comes soon after the revocation of Article 370, the Kashmir lockdown and Assam’s National Register of Citizens, and these are likely to be discussed.

An RSS functionary said that with 200 members from many affiliated organisations present, Article 370 and the NRC might be raised by someone, but the focus would be on strengthening the work of the Sangh Parivar.

On August 14, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said at the organisation’s headquarters in Maharashtra that the special status could be revoked because society as a whole had shown determination. Smaller affiliates have concerns about the Forests Reserve Act and the recently passed Medical Council of India Bill, and the long-standing demand for a Ram temple in Ayodhya may also be discussed.
