Telangana Cabinet Approves Construction of New Secretariat Complex

The Telangana government has accepted a report from a Cabinet sub-committee recommending that a new secretariat complex be built in Hyderabad, on the grounds that the existing building could not practically be modified.

The committees’ findings

According to an official release from Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s office on Thursday night, the sub-committee examined a technical committee’s report in detail and backed its call for a new complex.

The technical committee, appointed by the sub-committee, recommended demolishing the present secretariat and building a new one. It concluded that the existing structure could not be adapted to meet fire safety and other norms, or to create an integrated, iconic complex suited to the state. It urged the government to consider a state-of-the-art building complying with fire safety rules, the National Building Code (NBC) and Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) standards. To assess compliance in the current premises, the panel sought reports from the IGBC and from the Director General of Disaster Response and Fire Services.

The release said the sub-committee discussed the recommendations on 28.08.2019, agreed with the technical committee and submitted its report four days ago.

Background

The Cabinet had earlier set up a Group of Ministers led by Roads and Buildings Minister V Prashanth Reddy to examine plans for new Assembly and secretariat buildings, and left the final choice of building designs to the Chief Minister.

In the 2018 Telangana assembly election, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi won 88 seats and K. Chandrasekhar Rao was Chief Minister after the election.
