BJP MLA From Meerut Seeks NRC in Uttar Pradesh in Letter to Amit Shah

Satya Prakash Agarwal, a BJP MLA from Meerut, has written to Home Minister Amit Shah asking for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to be implemented in Uttar Pradesh. In the letter, he alleged that more than one lakh illegal migrants are living in the state, causing what he described as a “social imbalance”.

The MLA’s claims

Agarwal wrote that the situation in Meerut was deeply troubling and alleged that infiltrators were dominating the area and were involved in criminal and communal activity. He further claimed there were at least one lakh such people in each of the state’s 75 districts.

Speaking to reporters, he claimed that an NRC in Uttar Pradesh would identify more people than in Assam, where around 19 lakh people were found to be living in the country illegally. He alleged that these migrants, most of whom he said belonged to a particular community, had obtained Aadhaar and voter ID cards through irregular means, and warned that failure to act could endanger the country.

Constituencies and documents

The letter also claimed that two constituencies, Cant and South, had become minority-dominated because of illegal immigrants, which he called a “big conspiracy” threatening social and communal harmony.

He alleged that such migrants first settle in slums on the city’s outskirts, obtain official documents with help from some local politicians and then commit crimes that force members of the majority community to move away.
