Delhi MCD elections 2017: AAP names 109 candidates in first list

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday released its first list of candidates for the coming municipal corporation (MCD) elections in Delhi, naming 109 candidates.

Polls not yet announced

The dates of the Delhi civic polls had not been announced at the time, though the elections were expected to be held in April. Besides the Bharatiya Janata Party, AAP faces a challenge from Swaraj India, the party led by Yogendra Yadav, in these closely watched municipal contests.

Corruption as the main plank

As in earlier contests, AAP said it would campaign mainly on the issue of corruption in the civic bodies. The party set out this approach in a recent press release and cited remarks by its leader Dilip Pandey about the BJP-run North MCD.

Pandey pointed to a flyover that the North MCD had planned on Rani Jhansi Marg to link Pusa Road with North Delhi. He alleged that the project had been under construction for 20 years and that its budget had climbed from 70 crore to 700 crore.
