MCD election: BSP’s entry turns Delhi civic poll into a six-cornered contest
The Delhi municipal election on April 23 is heading for an unusual six-cornered contest after Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party decided to enter the fray, despite its heavy defeat in the recent Uttar Pradesh assembly election.
Who is contesting
The BSP has already named 70 candidates and plans to contest all 272 wards of the city, taking on the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress and Yogendra Yadav’s Swaraj India. Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) is set to field candidates in at least 150 seats.
How the last civic polls looked
In the previous municipal elections, only the BJP, the BSP and the Congress put up candidates in every seat. The Samajwadi Party came next, with 107 candidates.
- Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal contested 23 seats.
- Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal contested 21 seats.
- Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena contested 16 seats.
- Parties such as the Lok Jan Shakti Party, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Communist Party of India each fielded fewer than 100 candidates.

In the Uttar Pradesh election that preceded the civic polls, the BSP won 19 seats, while the BJP took 312.
