Mayawati dismisses Congress manifesto, says party has no credibility left

Congress manifesto an illusion, showoff, says Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday dismissed the Congress manifesto for the Lok Sabha election, saying the party’s past record meant its promises could not be believed.

What she said

In a tweet, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said the manifesto looked like an empty show, much like the Congress’s earlier promises. Because the party had repeatedly gone back on its word, she said, it had lost credibility with the public. She added that the Congress and the BJP were alike when it came to failing to keep promises.

The Congress manifesto, released by party president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, focused on job creation, farm distress, a single moderate GST rate and Rs 72,000 a year for poor families.

Charge against the BJP

Mayawati also claimed that the BJP was afraid of the alliance between the SP, the BSP and the RLD. Instead of talking about real issues, she said, BJP leaders were making needless casteist remarks about the alliance’s top leader. She urged people not to be provoked, and to respond through the results.

What happened next

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, counted on 23 May 2019, the BJP won 303 of the 543 seats and the Congress 52. Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term on 30 May 2019.
