PM Modi to visit 10 states in five days as Lok Sabha campaign gathers pace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to visit 10 states in five days from 8 February, a sign that his campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha election was moving into full swing. He was to travel every day and spend a night away from Delhi in Assam. On Sunday he was due to tour three regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
The itinerary
- 8 February: A rally in Chhattisgarh, his first visit to the state since the BJP’s heavy defeat in the assembly election, followed by a rally at Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
- 9 February: Projects in Guwahati, among them a foundation stone for a Brahmaputra bridge, an AIIMS and a new gas pipeline linking the northeast with the national gas grid. He was then to lay the foundation stone of a greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh and visit Tripura.
- The next day: Rallies in Tamil Nadu, at Hubballi in Karnataka and at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.
- 11 February: A programme with the Akshaya Patra Foundation in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, which serves mid-day meals to around 18 lakh children, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar. He was then to attend the Swachh Shakti programme in Kurukshetra, Haryana, for women sarpanches from across the country.
Tension with West Bengal
The West Bengal visit came as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was in conflict with the Centre over CBI action against the Kolkata Police Commissioner, and over the state’s refusal to let BJP leaders such as Yogi Adityanath and Shivraj Singh Chauhan address rallies there.
Background and what happened next
In the 2018 Chhattisgarh assembly election the Congress won 68 seats and the BJP 15, and Bhupesh Baghel became Chief Minister. In the Lok Sabha election held between 11 April and 19 May 2019, the BJP won 303 of 543 seats and Modi began a second term on 30 May 2019.
