Constitution and democracy under threat under BJP rule, says Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Friday that the country’s Constitution and democracy were under threat under BJP rule.

Attack on Modi and Shah

Addressing a public meeting in Pali, Gehlot took aim at Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, saying the pair had run the country for years while most people did not even know the names of the Union ministers. He said BJP leaders talked of a Congress-free India and branded their critics as anti-national, and called the situation alarming.

Gehlot described Modi as a good actor who should have been in the film industry. He said Modi had made promises such as bringing back black money during the last election, but not a single rupee had come back.

He also accused former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje of holding up development projects and weakening welfare schemes launched during his earlier term.

The Pali contest

Gehlot was campaigning for Badriram Jakhar, the Congress candidate for the Pali Lok Sabha seat. Pali is one of 13 constituencies in Rajasthan that vote on April 29, with the remaining 12 seats in the state voting in a later phase.

Gehlot became Chief Minister after the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly election, in which the Congress emerged as the largest party with 99 seats to the BJP’s 73. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, counted on 23 May 2019, the BJP won 303 seats nationally and the Congress 52.
