PM Modi likely to lay foundation for UP industrial projects on January 20

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected to lay the foundation stone for industrial projects in Uttar Pradesh, valued at as much as Rs 80,000 crore, at a ceremony to break ground on January 20. The state government was still awaiting official confirmation of the visit from the Prime Minister’s Office, an official said.

The projects

Most of the projects are in the IT and electronics sectors. They form part of memoranda of understanding worth Rs 4.68 lakh crore that the Yogi Adityanath government signed with public and private companies at the UP Investors’ Summit in February last year.

UP Industrial Development Minister Satish Mahana said the state aimed to start projects worth nearly Rs 1 lakh crore during the month and expected the ceremony to see the launch of projects valued between Rs 75,000 crore and Rs 80,000 crore.

Earlier ceremony and other plans

The Prime Minister had attended the first such ceremony in July last year, when foundation stones were laid for 80 projects valued at Rs 60,000 crore. The state government was also pushing other large infrastructure projects, including the Bundelkhand Defence Corridor, the 289-km Bundelkhand Expressway and the Jewar International Airport. The defence corridor was expected to draw investment of nearly Rs 50,000 crore.
