Yogi Adityanath says Mulayam praised Modi because he knows the ground reality

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav’s remark that he would like Narendra Modi to become Prime Minister again, saying the SP veteran understood the situation on the ground. Mulayam had made the comment in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, February 13, during a speech on the final day of the sixteenth Lok Sabha.

What Mulayam said

Mulayam surprised the House by telling the Prime Minister that he hoped Modi would return to the post, adding that his work had always been done quickly whenever he met him. The remark came at a time when the Samajwadi Party had formed an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh to take on the BJP.

Adityanath’s response

Adityanath said Mulayam’s words reflected the mood of the nation, and used the occasion to target SP president Akhilesh Yadav, saying it would be good if the son were as aware of reality as his father. He rejected the suggestion that Mulayam’s praise was linked to Akhilesh’s detention at Lucknow airport on February 12, when the state government refused him permission to attend a programme at Allahabad University.

SP workers were detained in several parts of the state on Wednesday while protesting against that detention. Adityanath said no one would be allowed to break the law at the Kumbh, whoever they were.

Rafale and Priyanka Gandhi

The Chief Minister also cited the CAG report on Rafale, which he said had vindicated the government, and mocked Congress president Rahul Gandhi, claiming that Priyanka Gandhi had been made general secretary because Rahul had failed.

What happened next

The BJP won 303 of 543 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election and Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term on 30 May 2019.
