Modi in Varanasi to launch textile schemes and lay hospital foundation stones

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, on Thursday morning for a visit during which he was to lay foundation stones for a number of projects and meet party workers.

Projects on the agenda

Modi said on Twitter that he would open a Trade Facilitation Centre and a Crafts Museum and launch schemes and programmes of the Ministry of Textiles during the trip. He was also due to lay foundation stones on the Banaras Hindu University campus for a Centenary Super Specialty Hospital and for the Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Hospital, as well as for an ESI super speciality hospital. “All these development works will greatly benefit the people of Varanasi,” he tweeted.

Meeting BJP workers

The Prime Minister was scheduled to interact with booth-level BJP workers from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. At a BJP Karyakarta Sammelan held at the DLW Ground, he waved to party workers alongside Uttar Pradesh BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya.

Rahul Gandhi’s allegations

The visit came a day after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, speaking at a rally in Mehsana, Gujarat, on Wednesday, alleged that Modi had accepted huge bribes from two corporate houses while serving as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Gandhi called for an independent probe into the matter. Attention was therefore on how, if at all, Modi would respond to the charges during the trip.
