Navjot Singh Sidhu calls Modi the ‘biggest liar’ at Gujarat rally

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his home state of Gujarat, saying the land that gave India Mahatma Gandhi had also produced a prime minister who was the “biggest liar”. He was speaking at a rally in Dang district while campaigning for Jitu Chaudhary, the Congress candidate for the Valsad Lok Sabha seat.

Sidhu’s charges

Sidhu, a minister in the Congress government in Punjab, said Modi worked only for the wealthy and not for the poor. Addressing a largely tribal audience, he said Modi was the PM of just one percent of rich people, and claimed that almost 80 percent of local residents in the district were working as labourers in other states. He also called Modi ‘Jhootha No. 1’ and ‘Feku No. 1’.

Jobs and promises

The former BJP leader accused Modi of failing to keep his promise, made before the 2014 election, of creating two crore jobs every year. According to Sidhu, only 8 lakh people got jobs during Modi’s tenure. He compared this with China, claiming it provided jobs to 70 lakh people in five years with a GDP growth of 6 percent, while India, with 8 percent, created only 8 lakh jobs.

Sidhu also alleged that state-run companies such as HAL, BSNL and MTNL were laying off staff, and said there were 25 lakh vacant posts in government departments which Rahul Gandhi would fill.

Congress promises

He told the gathering that Congress president Rahul Gandhi would immediately announce a loan waiver for Gujarat’s farmers after coming to power.
