Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant to be sworn in as Union minister in Modi 2.0
Arvind Sawant, the Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai South, will take the oath as a Union minister on Thursday, a senior party leader said on Wednesday. Sena leader Sanjay Raut said party chief Uddhav Thackeray had put forward Sawant’s name, and that it had been decided that each ally would get one minister.
Replacing Anant Geete
Sawant takes the place of Anant Geete, the only Shiv Sena minister in the previous Modi government, who was defeated from the Raigad Lok Sabha seat in last month’s election.
Who is Arvind Sawant
The 68-year-old kept his seat this time by defeating the Congress’s Milind Deora by 1,00,067 votes. He has been with the Shiv Sena since the party’s early years.
Sawant worked at Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) until 1995. He took voluntary retirement after being nominated to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Governor’s quota when the Shiv Sena-BJP government came to power that year. He was later elected to the Council from the Mumbai local bodies constituency.
He fought his first Lok Sabha election in 2014, beating Deora, then the sitting MP, from Mumbai South by 1,28,564 votes. He is also president of the MTNL employees’ union.
The swearing-in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to take the oath for a second term on Thursday along with a new council of ministers. A multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place in Delhi.
The BJP had won 303 of 543 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, and Modi was sworn in on 30 May 2019.
