MCD polls: BJP names final list of 100 candidates, gives priority to women
The BJP named 100 more candidates for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections on Monday, its second and final list,, only a few hours before nominations closed. The party said it had given preference to women, despite pressure from several quarters over tickets.
Who is on the list
A senior party leader said the list reflected the BJP’s commitment to empowering women. Among the better-known names is Poonam Parasar Jha, president of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha and wife of former MLA Anil Jha, who will contest from Mubarakpur Dabas ward in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).
The party has fielded six Muslim candidates in all. The final list includes Rubina from Quraish Nagar in the NDMC and, in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), Jamal Haidar from Abul Fazal Enclave.
Breakdown by corporation
- North Delhi Municipal Corporation: 34 candidates
- South Delhi Municipal Corporation: 40 candidates
- East Delhi Municipal Corporation: 26 candidates
The BJP had named its first list of 160 candidates the previous day. The three corporations have 272 wards between them: 104 each in the South and North corporations and 64 in the East.
