Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday told BJP MPs to give attention to animal welfare and humanitarian causes as he set out the government’s agenda up to 2025 at the party’s parliamentary party meeting.

What the Prime Minister said

Modi urged MPs to concentrate on their constituencies and come up with innovative ideas, reminding them that first impressions are lasting ones. He said MPs should work as a team with officials, and should pay attention to animal welfare at a time of year when animals often fall ill.

He also wanted them to be regular in Parliament and to be serious about the duty roster. Outlining the government’s targets, he said that until 2025 it would concentrate on socially relevant issues, naming TB, leprosy and disability as humanitarian concerns, and asked all MPs to work on them “on a mission mode”.

An earlier warning

It was not the first time the Prime Minister had spoken to MPs about their conduct. At a similar meeting earlier in the month, Modi criticised lawmakers who damage the party’s image. He voiced his displeasure with MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, son of senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, who had attacked a civic official with a bat during a demolition drive in Indore. The Prime Minister said generations of BJP workers had toiled for the party’s success and that such arrogance gave it a bad name, adding that bad behaviour would not be tolerated whoever’s son was involved.
