Tamil Nadu Congress Likens Modi-Shah to Duryodhana and Shakuni, Slams Rajinikanth
The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Monday criticised actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth in Chennai for praising the Modi government’s decision to scrap Article 370.
Congress’s criticism
In a statement, state Congress president KS Alagiri said he was surprised by Rajinikanth’s comments and that the actor appeared to have mixed up spirituality with religion. Alagiri said Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were like Duryodhana and Shakuni, not Krishna and Arjuna, because they had taken away people’s rights.
What Rajinikanth said
On Sunday, speaking at the launch of a book by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajinikanth congratulated Home Minister Amit Shah on what he called “Mission Kashmir” and praised his speech in Parliament. He described Shah and Modi as a Krishna-Arjuna pairing and wished Shah and the country well.
In the Mahabharata, Krishna and Arjuna are credited with a central role in the Pandavas’ victory over the Kauravas.
Wider debate in the state
The same Sunday, former Union minister P Chidambaram had attacked the BJP over the move, claiming the party would not have acted in the same way if the state had a Hindu majority.
The Tamil Nadu Congress had also recently hit back at MDMK leader Vaiko over his remarks linking the party to the Article 370 issue.
