BJP names 155 more candidates for Uttar Pradesh assembly election

The Bharatiya Janata Party has published its second list of candidates for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, naming 155 nominees. Among the best-known names are Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who previously belonged to the Congress, the party’s national secretary Sidharth Nath Singh, and Pankaj Singh, the son of Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Who announced the list

The names were made public by BJP general secretary Arun Singh together with Keshav Prasad Maurya, who heads the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit. With this list, the party has declared a total of 304 candidates for the state. None of those 304 nominees is a Muslim.

Key candidates

• Pankaj Singh will contest from Noida, his first time on the ballot. He is a general secretary in the state unit and had been passed over for a ticket in a couple of earlier elections. His name had been linked to several seats before the party settled on Noida.
• Sidharth Nath Singh, the BJP’s national secretary, has been given the Allahabad West seat.
• Garima Singh will be the party’s candidate in Amethi. She is the first wife of Sanjay Singh, a member of the Amethi royal family and a Congress MP.
• Rita Bahuguna Joshi, a former Congress leader, also features on the list.

What happened next

The BJP went on to win 312 seats in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, with the Samajwadi Party on 47 and the BSP on 19. Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister after the result.
