AAP Plans to Contest Around 100 Seats in 2019, Focusing on Delhi, Haryana, Punjab

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) intends to fight the 2019 Lok Sabha election in a more targeted way, putting up candidates in about 100 seats and concentrating mainly on Punjab, Haryana and Delhi in north India. In the 2014 general election the party fielded more than 400 candidates nationwide but won only four seats, all in Punjab.
Where the party will contest
AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who is in charge of the party’s units in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, said the party saw no sense in contesting everywhere. “So, plans are to contest around 80 to 100 seats where we are in a better position to influence the results,” he said.
Besides its three focus states, the party will put up candidates in some seats in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and also in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh it is looking at 10 to 15 seats, Singh said. It may also contest a few seats in Gujarat, where its organisation is strong.
Delhi, Haryana and Punjab
In Delhi, AAP has appointed in-charges in five of the city’s seven Lok Sabha constituencies, and they have begun meetings and campaigns with local workers. No in-charge has been named for New Delhi and West Delhi amid talk of a tie-up with the Congress, although party national convener Arvind Kejriwal, on a recent visit to Haryana, ruled out any alliance.
In Haryana, Kejriwal’s home state, the party hopes to win its first Lok Sabha seat. Its leaders believe voters there are ready to respond, helped by the grassroots work of local leader Navin Jaihind.
In Punjab, where AAP is the main opposition in the assembly, Singh said the party would try to grow. “We would like to increase our footprint in Punjab by winning more than four seats, this time,” he said.
What happened next
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election the BJP won 303 of the 543 seats and the Congress 52.
