BJP’s four Parivartan Yatras to culminate in Lucknow roadshow on Saturday
The BJP’s first pre-election campaign in Uttar Pradesh is set to end with a large roadshow in Lucknow on Saturday, when the four Parivartan Yatras that set out from different corners of the state last month converge on the capital.
Who will be there
Union Minister Rajnath Singh will be accompanied by Om Mathur, the party’s national vice-president who is in charge of the state, as well as Union ministers Kalraj Mishra and Uma Bharti (Water Resources) and Keshav Maurya, who heads the state BJP. The leaders will ride a specially modified chariot, named the ‘Vijay Rath’, towards Hazratganj crossing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had originally been due to speak at a Maha Parivartan rally in the capital on Saturday. That was postponed; his Lucknow rally is now set for January 2.
Four routes into the capital
- The yatra that began in Saharanpur on November 5, led by BJP legislature party leader Suresh Kumar Khanna, will come in along Sitapur Road.
- The Jhansi yatra, which set off on November 6 under state president Keshav Prasad Maurya, will arrive via Hardoi Road.
- Kalraj Mishra’s yatra, launched at Sonebhadra on November 8, will enter from Rae Bareli Road.
- Uma Bharti’s yatra, which started in Ballia on November 9, will reach Lucknow by Faizabad Road.
The four processions are to meet at the Moti Mahal lawns at about 1 pm and then move together, with Rajnath Singh at the head of the roadshow, to Hazratganj crossing close to the BJP state headquarters. There, leaders will garland statues of four figures: Mahatma Gandhi, Bhimrao Ambedkar, Uda Devi and Sardar Patel.
What happened next
The BJP won 312 seats in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, against 47 for the Samajwadi Party and 19 for the BSP, and Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister in March 2017.
