‘Fun and Frolic’ in Corbett Won’t Fix Economy: Yechury Jabs PM Over Man vs Wild

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his appearance on Discovery Channel’s Man vs Wild, saying that “fun and frolic” in Jim Corbett National Park would not resolve the country’s economic troubles. The episode, filmed inside the national park, was broadcast on Monday night.
What Yechury said
In posts on Twitter, the Left leader blamed the government for what he called a grave economic crisis that it had created since 2014. He said he had heard no coherent plan from the government, only what he described as divisive talk aimed at causing social disharmony.
Yechury argued that the slowdown could no longer be dismissed as anecdotal, because fresh data every day showed how seriously all sectors were affected. He said the warning signs were plain and accused those in charge of the economy of being absent or of diverting attention from the real problems.
Context
The remarks came a few months into the government’s new term. Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term as Prime Minister on 30 May 2019, after the BJP won 303 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in the general election.
