Ahead of Assembly Polls, Fadnavis to Resume ‘Mahajanadesh Yatra’ From August 21

Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will restart his ‘Mahajanadesh Yatra’ next week, having halted it because of floods, a BJP functionary said in Mumbai on Wednesday.

New schedule

Fadnavis began the mass contact tour from Amravati in the Vidarbha region on August 1, ahead of state assembly elections due in September-October. He paused it on August 6 after the opposition criticised him for campaigning while heavy rain was causing damage across the state.

BJP leader Sujitsingh Thakur, who is organising the yatra, said it would resume on August 21. The first phase, covering Vidarbha and Nandurbar in north Maharashtra, had been due to end by August 9, and the second phase was originally planned to start on August 17. Under the revised plan, Kolhapur, Pune, Sangli and Satara have been dropped from the route, Thakur said.

Fadnavis has described the ‘mega mandate march’ as a way of reporting to the people on what the BJP-led government has done over the last five years.

What happened next

In the 2019 Maharashtra assembly election, the BJP won 105 of the 288 seats, the Shiv Sena 56, the NCP 54 and the Congress 44. After the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance broke down, Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena became Chief Minister in November 2019 with the support of the NCP and the Congress.
