Raebareli Congress MLA Aditi Singh Questions Inaction Over Alleged Attack

Aditi Singh, the Congress MLA from Raebareli Sadar, accused the administration of inaction at a media briefing in Lucknow on Monday, over an alleged attack in May on her and several Zila Panchayat members at a Harchandpur toll plaza close to Raebareli.

The alleged attack

She said she was travelling from Lucknow to Raebareli on 14 May for a no-confidence vote against Awadhesh Singh, the Zila Panchayat chief, when men allegedly linked to BJP MLC Dinesh Singh fired at her car near Modi School in Harchandpur. Her complaint names Dinesh Singh, his brother Ganesh Singh and Awadhesh Singh, and the FIR, registered under several IPC sections, also lists seven unidentified people along with Ramesh Singh, Abhishek Singh, Tera Singh and Bachcha Singh.

Her complaints

Aditi Singh said none of those named had been arrested and the main accused had not surrendered in court, even though she had raised the matter with the superintendent of police, the district magistrate and the Chief Secretary. She said those who had been arrested were connected to a separate personal feud, that circle officer Vineet Singh had been given extra charge of Maharajganj rather than being punished despite serious complaints against him, and that the security of three Zila Panchayat members had been withdrawn in spite of court orders.

Calling the attackers history-sheeters and saying Ganesh Singh faced several serious cases, she said she planned to take up the issue in the Assembly and also write to the state’s Chief Minister. She also alleged that Zila Panchayat funds were being misused and that bank funds were being diverted to companies owned directly or indirectly by Dinesh Singh.

The denial

Dinesh Singh has rejected all the allegations against himself and his brothers. He said that despite their political differences, nobody in Raebareli would believe he had plotted an attack on Aditi, whom he described as being like a daughter to him, and said he and his brothers were ready to face any inquiry.
