Congress reviews Rahul Gandhi’s defeat in Amethi

Congress inspecting annihilation of Rahul Gandhi in Amethi

The Congress has begun examining why its president, Rahul Gandhi, lost the party stronghold of Amethi in the Lok Sabha election, a party functionary said on Tuesday.

The review team

Zubair Khan, who handles political work for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party general secretary, and Kishori Lal Sharma, the representative of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, have been camping in Amethi for the past three days to study the possible reasons for the loss.

Rajiv Singh, a member of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, said the exercise would reach down to the village level, with the team meeting block and panchayat heads.

Fallout from the result

Union Minister Smriti Irani defeated Gandhi by 55,120 votes. After the result, Amethi Congress Committee president Yogendra Mishra offered to resign.

Congress leader Dharmendra Shukla wrote to Gandhi blaming his representative, Chandrakant Dubey, for the defeat and asked for an inquiry, a party functionary said.

Background

Nationally, the Congress won 52 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 election, while the BJP won 303. Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term on 30 May 2019.
