First session of new Lok Sabha likely to begin on June 6

The principal session of seventeenth Lok Sabha prone to start on June 6

The first session of the newly elected Lok Sabha is likely to begin on June 6 and end on June 15, sources said on Monday. A pro-tem Speaker is also expected to be appointed on the opening day.

Session schedule

According to the sources, the pro-tem Speaker will administer the oath to all newly elected MPs, and the Speaker is expected to be elected on June 10. After the Speaker is chosen, both Houses will take up the motion of thanks, to which Narendra Modi will reply. President Ram Nath Kovind will address a joint sitting of the two Houses on the first day of the session.

The sources added that the session dates are expected to be finalised at the first meeting of the new cabinet on May 31, the day after Modi’s swearing-in.

Swearing-in on May 30

Rashtrapati Bhavan announced on Sunday evening that Modi would take the oath as Prime Minister at 7 pm on May 30, along with members of the Union Council of Ministers. In a tweet from its official account, run by the President’s Secretariat, it said the President would administer the oath of office and secrecy to the Prime Minister and other ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On Saturday the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously elected Modi as its leader, and he then met the President in his capacity as leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

What happened next

Narendra Modi was sworn in for his second term as Prime Minister on 30 May 2019. The BJP had won 303 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in the election, counted on 23 May 2019.
