Congress to contest Delhi Lok Sabha seats alone after AAP talks fail

Will fight alone in Delhi without AAP: Congress

The Congress announced on Friday that it would contest the Lok Sabha election in Delhi on its own, while saying it was still willing to ally with the Aam Aadmi Party if the arrangement was limited to the national capital.

What the Congress said

PC Chacko, the Congress in-charge for Delhi, said the party was going it alone because the AAP had taken an unreasonable position. He said the party remained ready for an alliance if the AAP agreed to one confined to Delhi, adding that the two parties needed to fight the BJP together. He told reporters the Congress had been forced to go solo because the AAP was going back on its stand.

How the talks broke down

On Wednesday, the AAP had turned down the Congress offer of a tie-up in Delhi. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said all routes to an alliance with the Congress were closed.

The Congress had been keen on an alliance in Delhi, while the AAP wanted any such arrangement to extend to Haryana and Punjab as well. Negotiations collapsed after the two sides could not agree on seat-sharing in Delhi and Haryana.

What happened next

The BJP won 303 of 543 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, counted on 23 May 2019.
