Akhilesh Yadav says BJP using CBI against SP and BSP after alliance talks

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday accused the Narendra Modi government of using the CBI against leaders of the SP and the BSP because the BJP was nervous about their alliance. He described CBI raids on SP and BSP leaders and IAS officers in an illegal mining case as politically motivated. “Earlier, the Congress gave the opportunity to meet the CBI, now the BJP has given it,” he said. The BJP quickly hit back, noting that the Allahabad High Court took up the matter in 2016 and handed it to the CBI.
The searches
On Saturday the CBI searched 14 places in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, including the homes of a woman IAS officer, an SP leader and a BSP leader. Agency spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said a case was registered on January 2 against 11 people, including some known and unknown public servants, under provisions of the IPC and the anti-corruption law, the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Those named include IAS officer B. Chandrakala, a former District Magistrate of Hamirpur; miner Adil Khan; mining officer Moinuddin; SP leader Ramesh Kumar Mishra and his brother Dinesh Kumar Mishra; former Hamirpur mining department clerk Ram Ashray Prajapati; and Sanjay Dikshit, who contested the 2017 assembly election as a BSP candidate.
The allegations
Dayal said the case relates to unlawful sand mining from 2012 to 2016, which the agency began probing on the orders of the Allahabad High Court, including the grant and renewal of mining licences in that period. The IAS officer is alleged to have allotted 50 sand mining leases as Hamirpur DM in 2012, bypassing the e-tendering process. The CBI said its team found some documents and seized her bank locker and two of her bank accounts, and collected mining documents from Adil Khan’s home. According to the official, his licence was granted on the recommendation of then mining minister Gayatri Prajapati.
A senior official said the role of the state’s mining ministers during 2012-16 would also be examined. Akhilesh Yadav held the mining portfolio from 2012 to 2013.
