Uttarakhand Elections 2017: Congress names 63 candidates, Harish Rawat in two seats

The Congress has named 63 candidates for the Uttarakhand assembly election due on February 15. Chief Minister Harish Rawat is on the list and will stand in two constituencies. The names were agreed by the Congress central election committee, meeting in New Delhi on January 21, chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi.

The campaign

The contest in Uttarakhand is expected to be a straight fight between the Congress and the BJP. According to the news agency PTI, both parties are asking voters for a mandate on development. Rawat is also expected to remind voters that the BJP-led Centre dismissed his Congress government, which was later restored by the courts. The party has brought in political strategist Prashant Kishor for the campaign, and Rawat has described him as “Chyawanprash”.

The BJP won 57 seats in the 2017 Uttarakhand assembly election and the Congress 11. Trivendra Singh Rawat became Chief Minister.
