Shiv Sena’s Ambadas Danve Wins Maharashtra Legislative Council Election

Ambadas Danve of the Shiv Sena on Thursday won the biennial Maharashtra Legislative Council election from the Aurangabad-Jalna local authorities constituency, an election official said in Mumbai. Danve won the contest, held on Monday, by 418 votes.

The contest and turnout

Danve faced Baburao Kulkarni of the Congress. The electorate was made up of representatives of local self-government bodies, and 647 of the 657 eligible voters cast their ballots, a turnout of 99.48 per cent.

According to the official, 321 men and 326 women voted, while only 10 voters, nine of them women, stayed away.

Background and reactions

The victory makes up for Danve’s defeat in the 2014 assembly election, when he lost the Gangapur seat in Aurangabad district to Prashant Bamb of the BJP.

The Congress was critical of the outcome. Anil Patel, who heads the party in Aurangabad district, alleged that the Sena had used money power to sway voters.
