PM Modi holds security review meeting after Pakistani jets violate Indian airspace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with top security and intelligence officials after Pakistan Air Force jets violated Indian airspace on Wednesday morning, sources said. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force were among those present.

The government’s account

The government confirmed that Pakistan had responded to India’s counter-terror strike by using its Air Force to target military installations on the Indian side. The Pakistani aircraft were detected and the Indian Air Force responded immediately, an official said.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said an IAF pilot who engaged the intruding Pakistani jets was missing in action. India was verifying Pakistan’s claim that the pilot was in its custody.

Pakistan’s claims

Pakistan said earlier that its air force had shot down two Indian fighter jets on Wednesday morning and claimed to have captured two IAF pilots. Its military spokesman, Major General Asif Ghafoor, said one of them was in hospital.

What happened next

The Indian Air Force strike at Balakot had taken place on 26 February 2019. Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was returned by Pakistan on 1 March 2019.
