Modi to address four BJP rallies in Haryana ahead of 2019 assembly polls

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address four election rallies in Haryana over two days as the BJP steps up its campaign with about two weeks left before the assembly polls, the party said in a statement from Chandigarh.

Modi’s schedule

• October 14: Ballabhgarh, in Faridabad district
• October 15: Dadri, Thanesar and Hisar

The BJP has nominated Commonwealth Games medal winner Babita Phogat as its candidate from Dadri.

Other BJP campaigners

Party president and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also due to campaign, along with working president J P Nadda and Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister. Shah’s October 9 rallies are in the districts of Kaithal, Hisar, Bhiwani and Rohtak, and in Fatehabad, Panchkula, Karnal and Gurgaon on October 14. Nadda will address four meetings in Sirsa and Gurgaon on October 11, the day Adityanath is also scheduled to campaign in the state.

The stakes

The BJP had 48 members in the outgoing assembly and has set itself a goal of more than 75 seats in the 90-member House. Polling was set for October 21 and counting for October 24.

What happened next

In the 2019 Haryana election, the BJP won 40 seats, the Congress 31 and the Jannayak Janta Party 10. Manohar Lal Khattar was Chief Minister after the election.
