PM Modi begins two-day Gujarat visit, to launch pension scheme and Ahmedabad Metro

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to begin a two-day visit to Gujarat on Monday, during which he would open the first, six-km phase of the Ahmedabad Metro and launch a pension scheme for informal workers, PM-SYM (Pradhan Mantri Shram-Yogi Maandhan Yojana), official sources said. He would also lay the foundation stone of the Umiya Dham temple complex.

Jamnagar

The visit was to start in Jamnagar in the Saurashtra region, where the Prime Minister would dedicate to the nation the Guru Gobind Singh Hospital’s new 750-bed wing and open its PG hostel. He would launch projects under the SAUNI water scheme, including the Und-1 to Ranjit Sagar and Machu-1 to Nyari lift irrigation schemes, and lay foundation stones for the Jodiya desalination plant and the lift irrigation link from Und-3 to Venu-2. Railway projects, including gauge conversion, were also on the list, along with flagging off the Bandra-Jamnagar Humsafar Express.

Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar

From Jamnagar he was to travel to Ahmedabad for an event at the Umiya Dham temple complex. As part of the metro programme, he would lay the foundation of the 28.28-km second phase and ride part of the first stretch. He would then dedicate several hospitals in Ahmedabad district, including a women and children’s super-speciality hospital and cancer, eye and dental hospitals.

On Tuesday, March 5, he was scheduled to visit the Annapurna Dham Trust at Adalaj in Gandhinagar where foundation stones were to be laid for two buildings, a Shikshan Bhavan and a Vidhyarthi Bhavan.

The pension scheme

At Vastral he was to launch PM-SYM, a voluntary, contributory pension scheme for unorganised-sector workers earning up to Rs. 15,000 a month, transfer benefits online to some beneficiaries and hand out pension cards. Announced in the Union Budget in February, the scheme promises each subscriber a minimum pension of Rs. 3000 a month after the age of 60.
