Mumbai CSMT foot overbridge collapse: 6 dead, FIR against Central Railway and BMC officials

Six people were killed and 36 injured when a section of a foot overbridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai gave way on Thursday evening, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The collapse happened at about 7.35 pm near The Times of India building and Anjuman Islam College.

The collapse and rescue

Police said the bridge linked the north end of Platform 1 at CSMT station with BT Lane. Some people passing beneath it were among the injured, who were taken to Bombay Hospital, St George Hospital and Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital. Two of the injured were in critical condition. The NDRF, which had initially said 10-12 people were feared trapped, withdrew its team at 10.34 pm once rescue work was over, and the remaining part of the bridge was being demolished. Traffic in the area was diverted.

The dead were identified as Apoorva Prabhu, 35, Ranjana Tambe, 40, Sarika Kulkarni, 35, Zahid Siraj Khan, 32, Mohan G Kaygunde, 55, and Tapendra Singh, 35. According to PTI, the bridge was popularly called the Kasab bridge because a 26/11 attacker had walked across it.

FIR and government response

An FIR was filed at Azad Maidan police station against officials of Central Railway and the BMC under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with causing death by negligence. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced Rs 5 lakh for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured. He said the bridge was built in 1980 and had been found fit in a structural audit a year earlier, which suggested a flaw in that audit, and promised a committee to examine it. The Railways said the bridge was maintained by the BMC.

Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply anguished. Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered condolences, and Congress leader Milind Deora sought a case under Section 302 against the BMC. BJP MLA Raj Purohit demanded action against the engineer who certified the bridge, while AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan criticised the Centre for spending Rs 6,000 crore on the Sardar Patel statue. The Aam Aadmi Party asked how often ordinary Mumbaikars would be crushed under such wreckage.
