Mayawati dissolves Rajasthan BSP unit after all six MLAs join Congress

Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati has dissolved the party’s entire state executive in Rajasthan, days after all six BSP legislators in the state crossed over to the ruling Congress and party workers came to blows at a meeting in Jaipur.

New arrangement

Bhagwan Singh, the BSP’s Rajasthan in-charge, said the decision was taken on Mayawati’s instructions. He said national convener Ramji Gautam and former Rajya Sabha member Munkad Ali have been put in charge of the party’s affairs in the state.

What led to it

The six MLAs joined the Congress on September 16. Two days before the dissolution was announced, workers clashed at a state-level BSP meeting held in Jaipur after the defections.

Background

In the December 2018 Rajasthan assembly election, the Congress emerged as the largest party with 99 of the 199 seats that went to the polls, against 73 for the BJP, and Ashok Gehlot became Chief Minister.
