Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on August 2 that land disputes lie at the root of most violent crime in the state, and called for steps to reduce them. He was speaking at a meeting of the state’s revenue and land reforms department in Patna.

Tackling land disputes

Kumar said that close to 60 percent of violent crimes in Bihar stem from disputes over land. To bring these down, he said, a new survey and settlement of land records was being carried out, alongside several other measures that the public needed to know about.

One of these, he said, allows land divided among family members to be registered for a token payment of Rs 100. He asked officials to publicise the scheme widely so that more people could use it, saying it would help cut down on disputes and their consequences.

Plans for Patna Museum

Before the meeting, the chief minister reviewed a presentation on upgrading and expanding the historic Patna Museum, which is more than 100 years old. He directed that any new construction should leave the original building undamaged, that trees be planted along the boundary wall and that exhibits be clearly visible to visitors.

Kumar also floated the idea of an underground link between Patna Museum and the Bihar Museum, which opened two years ago a few kilometres away. He said trolleys running through such a subway would let visitors see both museums in a single trip, and that it would become a distinctive feature of the city.
