The Congress unit in the state, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee or JKPCC, voiced serious concern over the detention of its senior functionaries by the state administration and called for their immediate release, a party spokesperson said in Jammu on Friday.

Leaders under detention

In a statement, the JKPCC said several senior leaders had been under house arrest since midnight on August 4. Among them, it named:

• Saifuddin Soz
• Gulam Nabi Monga and Farooq Andrabi
• Peerzada Mohd Sayeed
• Mohd Amin Bhat and Gular Ahmad Wani
• Haji Abdul Rashid Dar

The party said former minister Usman Majeed and other leaders, among them Hilal Ahmad Shah, were being held at places that had not been disclosed.

The party’s demand

The JKPCC warned the government that locking people up and holding political leaders illegally would not solve the state’s problems. It also expressed deep distress over the situation following the Centre’s decision to revoke the provisions of Article 370 that gave the state special status, and to bring a separate bill dividing Jammu and Kashmir.

The statement came a day after Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, and Gulam Ahmad Mir, who heads the state Congress, were stopped from entering the state on Thursday and sent back from Srinagar airport.
