On Friday, Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the CPI(M), accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of bringing the economy to a standstill, saying all indicators showed it had “ground to a halt”. He was reacting to news reports pointing to an economic slowdown.

Yechury’s charges

In posts on Twitter, Yechury blamed the government’s policies and actions for the situation and said that no amount of manipulation of figures, bluffing or public relations could now hide the hardship people were facing.

He argued that the economy cannot be separated from society, politics and governance. In his view, poor governance under the present government, combined with what he described as the ruling party’s ideology of actively spreading social disharmony and hatred, could not deliver high economic growth.

Earlier criticism

A day earlier, on Thursday, Yechury had also targeted the government, alleging that its economic policies had “destroyed” farmers, small traders and entrepreneurs.
